Chapter 24
âI want to meet Joe, and Bacon,â Tara said loudly as she blew her hair dry.
âWe havenât met them yet either,â Lacy called back.
She was putting on her makeup in front of the mirror that was over the dresser. Tara turned off the dryer and fussed with her hair as she walked out of the bathroom in her bra and underwear. Lacy had her mouth open wide as she carefully applied mascara.
âThat makes me hot,â Tara complained, lifting her hair off her neck.
âI know, you shower up, and then get out and sweat again. Itâs hard to feel completely clean,â Lacy said as she stared into the mirror.
âNow, what to wear,â Tara pondered.
âSomething you wonât mind sweating in,â Lacy suggested. âThe nights donât get much cooler, and you will be dancing.â
She angeled this way and that, examining her appearance in the mirror. Satisfied she smoothed her hands down her blue sundress.
âRoni seems good, calm,â Tara said. âHas she been talking to Mack much?â
âSheâs emailed and Skyped. Heâs not always so great at responses. You know Mackâ¦heâs more likely to ask where she put the toilet brush than say something gooshy. I think we all like gooshy sometimes,â Lacy said. âShe would never say that, though.â
Wanting to cool down before deciding what she would wear Tara sat on the edge of the bed.
âA lot of men arenât great at expressing emotion. Michael says âI love youâ more than he did in the beginning, but I still donât think it comes totally naturally,â Tara said.
âKelly tries pretty hard,â Lacy said, âmaybe because we both were married before.â
Tara watched her put her makeup back into the small lion-print zippered bag sheâd pulled it from and tuck it in the top drawer of the dresser.
âMy turn,â Tara said, as Lacy stepped away from the mirror. âI canât go back into the bathroom, itâs too hot. Like my fancy makeup bag?â
She held up a plastic Ziploc bag containing her makeup.
âIt works,â Lacy chuckled.
âArenât you girls finished yet?â Roni called from the kitchen.
âIâm ready,â Lacy said entering the kitchen. âTara is finishing her makeup.â
Tara quickly pulled the items out that she needed. She listened to the girls chat as she started her makeup.
âCute dress,â Roni complimented.
She was working to uncork a bottle of wine.
âLook at you,â Lacy said, admiring Roniâs figure-hugging, simple black dress. âLooks good with all that blonde hair of yours hanging loose. I hadnât realized it was down to your shoulders already.â
âWith the humidity here, Iâve been wearing it up a lot. Something different tonight,â Roni said. âI thought we could have a glass here and then go to the club. We can have some appetizers or dinner if anyone wants. Iâm not very hungry since we had a late lunch.â
âIâd be good with apps,â Jenny said, coming into the room.
âMe too,â Tara called from the bedroom.
ââââââââââââ
The club was busy with dinner guests when they arrived. Roni felt very conspicuous now that she was part of a posse. She could feel the eyes on them.
